2019 Name Game, The “T” Year

IMG_0092
A young Mandan. Born in 2012, this photo was taken in early 2013.

This will be the 7th year that I have made this post. This is a “fun” only post where any of you can suggest names for the 2019 foals born in the Pryors.  Of course, like on all the previous years, I can not guarantee that they will be used, but it will be fun to list them, and I do know that whenever a foal is born, I come to this post to look at all of the suggestions.  And if you can, please include the meaning for the name, it would be very helpful to know that.

In 2000, the BLM started using a letter for each year of foals, starting with A.  This year is the T year.  So please feel free to list your ideas in the comment section of this post.  To read more about this system and why we use names, please refer to my Name Game post that I did last in 2013.  Click on Name Game to go there.

I am looking forward to reading all of your suggestions.  If someone else has already posted your name idea, please list it again anyway.  It will be fun to see what the most popular name suggestions are!

I’ll be posting my annual “Who Will Have Foals This Year” post soon.  But in the mean time, let’s have some fun coming up with names!

  • How about:

Thane – A Scottish clan chief
Thor – God of Thunder in Norse mythology
Thyri – The feminine form of Thor
Torvi – Swedish ‘The Silent Woman’.

Tried to find some different names for the horses this year.

  • Here are some names I came up with, plus some that I pulled from above comments that I liked.

    My Names:

Tried’n True (especially if Nimbus has a foal this year)
    Testimony
    Tremor
Thebe (a nymph loved by the river-god Asopus)
    Taciturn
    Tenacious
    Truman
    Tameless
    Tides

And some I like from above are:

    Tenebra
    Thane
    Tamaris
    Texas
    Tama

  • I just saw Petra foaled. If it is a filly, I have one.
“away out here they got a name for rain and wind and fire the rain is Tess the fires Joe and they call the wind Mariah”
The Cloud Foundation posted this on Mariah/Blanca’s memorial post. It would be nice to honor Mariah with the name Tess.

  • I have one for Petra’s foal if it is a filly. TCF had this lyric on Mariah’s memorial post:
“a way out here they got a name for rain and wind and fire
the rain is Tess the fires Joe and they call the wind Mariah”
Tess would be a great name for a Petra filly.

  • I’ve been an avid follower of the Mustangs of Pryor Mountain for years. I’ve got a few ‘T’ name suggestions for the foals of 2019…

Takoda – a name from the Lakota Sioux tribe meaning ‘Friend to All’.
Tally – as in tally marks or lines. Good for Duns and Grullas with a set of bold shoulder or leg stripes.
Tomahawk – a hatchet/battle ax used by Native Americans. Good for a tough, protective stallion.
Topanga – as in Topanga Canyon in California. Meaning ‘Where the Mountain Meets the Sea’ in the local Native American.
Tumbleweed – the iconic, rolling scrub brush found in most Western scenery.
