This foal and his mother have a very special place in my heart.
This young mare was born to Jackson and Galena in 2012. (Making her Lakota’s granddaughter as well!) During the first winter of her life, she was separated from her family band. She ended up in Cappuccino’s band before her first birthday. Blanca looked after her like a mother, and she grew into a beautiful quiet mare that has remained with sturdy and handsome Cappuccino since that time.
In 2014 she had her first foal. My guests and I were one of the first to see him. He was named Obsidian. Obsidian died just 6 days after he was born. You can read about his birth here: THE BIRTH and also read about the day he died here: Obsidian
In 2016, Moenkopi foaled again. This time she had a filly named Quivira. She was born in September that year, and by the end of January 2017, she had disappeared. It is not known what happened.
This past weekend Moenkopi was found with her 3rd foal. It looks to be a colt. His name is going to be Shoshone.
Moenkopi is the 2012 daughter of Jackson and Galena. Cappuccino is the 2002 son of Rosarita and Starbuck.
I hope that this little colt survives and thrives on the mountain. I look forward to watching him grow up into a strong stallion.

The dam appears bonyiher spine and tailhead are protruding. This does not bode well for her foal.
I have seen other mares look like this coming out of winter. They have managed to put on weight and raise a healthy foal. We will hope that Moenkopi can do the same. She is a strong mare and a good mother.
it’s really great that Moenkopi can still have the chance to have a colt I admit that I do not absolutely suspect that Moenkopi is pregnant she seem really too thin to have a foal at the beginning of the year and now I understand the foal is really small … Moenkopi does not look very fit either she is very skinny, I think she will have trouble keeping her foal but I think it’s a good mother so I do not ‘do not worry .
This foal does not look any smaller than any other foal. We will hope for the best for Moenkopi and her new colt. I know she will give it her best as she always has.

The foal is born in the right time of the year and i am hopefull that this time he will survive and Moenkopi can finally have an offspring in the mountain. Her condition doesn’t worry me much since spring is ahead of us with plenty of pasture to forage. Hopefully all goes well. It seems this year we will have more foals than the last two years!!!!
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I hope he will survive. He is in a great band, even without Blanca there. I know Moenkopi will try her best.
Poor Moenkopi hasn’t had much luck as a mother but she’s a bit older and more experienced now so hopefully it will be third time lucky for her this time. It’s great for Cappuccino too. For all his success as a band stallion he doesn’t have many offspring on the range to show for it, so hopefully this little guy will make it.
I’m seeing a lot of people saying the foal looks frail but he just looks like a typical newborn foal to me. He seems sturdy enough and dressed for the cold weather. He has plenty of bone too- he’s going to be a big boy like his dad.
