This is a very hard and heartbreaking post. I was told today that Isadora was found dead on the mountain top. It was determined that she passed giving birth, the foal did not survive. What a horrible and tragic way to go. I pray that she did not suffer long and that she and her foal passed quietly. I am sure that she is standing next to her sire Starman and her little foal, Lemi that passed in 2011-12 winter. Rest in Peace. You will be so missed.
Isadora is the 2008 daughter of Rosarita and Starman. The sire of the foal was Morning Star, he is the 1996 son of Washakie and Plenty Coup.
7 Foals have been born this year, 4 survived.
2017 has been a very difficult year. We have lost a lot of horses. This loss, coming off of Blanca’s death just 10 days ago.
For those of us that are so close to these horses, it is extremely difficult. Since Lakota’s death, I have tried to be a bit more distant, but truly, that is not who I am, or who I want to be, I feel each death and tragedy on the mountain. 2017 has been one of pain, and I pray that 2018 will bring us more joy.
Once again I am going to stress and ask that we not rush into another removal. The mountain is doing it’s own natural part right now to adjust the population. Sixteen horses will be over the age of 20 next year, that alone should be taken into consideration.
Rest in Peace Isadora and foal, we can not understand, but for whatever reason, this was your time to go.
Sandy
I am so sorry. The loss is painful.
I am so sorry for the loss. How sad for those of you who visit the horses all the time and are so familiar with them. We can only hope it was a peaceful passing and at least her baby wasn’t left alone. I hope the fact only 4 foals have survived this year will be taken into consideration if a gather takes place. I truly hope and pray the horses will just be left alone for now.
It has to be a terrible heartbreak for you. I’m so sorry.
Wow so few foals this year due to PZP/Mother Nature. When is the next removal tentatively planned? I’m glad there wasn’t one in 2014 when I was on the mountain. I think it would have been too difficult to watch.
So, so sorry, Sandy, what a tragic loss. Heartbreaking! I hope beautiful Isadora and her foal did not suffer long, either. What happened to little Lemi? Is Rosarita still alive and on the mountain? I find the picture of the three of them so touching and heartwarming, both mares doting over little Lemi. My heart is heavy.
Thank you Karin. Yes, Rosarita is still alive. She is in Mescalero’s band.
Very sad to hear and I am surprised at the low number of foals. Thank you for your blog and for what you witness – both the joy and sadness.
Hello from Paris (France)
It is difficult for me to read in english and all understand but I know the deads of those horses.
It is tragedic …
R.I.P for them
So sad! Is this the first year since 2004 with negative size growth or 2011 was with negative growth as well ?
Hi Maria, I need to look back last year at my notes, but I believe we may have been negative then as well, or even. Certainly these past two years have not seen much growth.
I am so sad because Isadora is so young and her two foals is deceased so she dont have any foal in the pryor … But its the life she is cruel but its like that …I hope that it was not too sad for you but we all hope that the year 2018 will be better…maybe it’s not the right time but I wanted to know when will you make the post on horses die this year?
courage has you and has all the team of pryors for this bad news…
I will make that post in December
Ok because last year you made him in october . Blue sioux is in the band of Irial?
Yes, Blue Sioux is in Irial’s band. With the way things are going this year, I think I will wait to make that post…
