Pryor foal number 16 was born on July 15, 2014 to Lariat. The possible father is Garay. I saw Lariat with Garay and his band several times last summer.
Lariat is the 2011 daughter of Madonna and Duke. Garay is the 2006 son of Mariposa and Conquistador.
The foal was discovered by Micheal Francis and his photography group. The name they choose for him is Oklahoma.
Sandy, wonderful photos, especially that last one. Classic pose in a stunning landscape. Oklahoma is cute, but Lariat looks a little thin. Many of the other mares didn’t look so bad after foaling, but maybe I’m wrong??
Yes, Lariat looks thin to me as well. I hope she is able to gain some weight.
He is a cutie! Glad Lariat made it through the birth just fine. I know Joy brought up the point at couple weeks ago that Lariat was still slim in the hips, so glad that didn’t seem to have been an issue. I bet this band is happy to have a foal with them. I very much look forward to see how this band interacts with their newest member. I know they briefly had a foal when they had Jovianna, but she wasn’t with them for very long. I know Juniper and Horizon liked spending time with Malakai. I’m glad Lariat has Tonopah with her too to help guide her. I wish Madonna could be with her, but Tonopah has lots of maternal wisdom too. I have a feeling Lariat will be very maternal too with Madonna as her mother and Tonopah as a second mom. And yay for Garay’s first foal too!
Surprising to me was Tonapah, who kept a distance from the foal and Lariat for the first few days. I almost thought she was going to leave the band, instead of being the strong lead mare, she hung back. But this morning, she was much closer. I look forward to watching the progress, I hope she adjusts okay to this new change. Horizon and Fiesta seem indifferent to the foal, no reaction either way. I saw Juniper kick the foal, but that is not that uncommon from what I have seen with other bands. Today she much better. Lariat needs to eat more, she is thin.
That is surprising. Maybe Tonopah had been enjoying the carefree lifestyle. Hopefully she adjusts and doesn’t leave the band. I’ve wondered if the addition of a foal to the band could force the strain between Horizon and Fiesta and cause a break. Hopefully there will be now more kicks to the foal from anyone. Lariat does seem thin. And of course now she’s going to be using even more calories nursing Oklahoma. But the forage seems to be great so hopefully she’ll pick up weight soon.
I had a feeling the name Oklahoma would be used this season! We Americans like using our states for names. 🙂 My next guess would be Obama since we like reusing Presidential names too. Cute little guy.
Naming foals after politicians could be an idea if it would make them more inclined to help the horses. After all, who could resist a cute fluffy picture of a foal?
Glad to see Lariat foaled safely-I’m sure she’ll be a wonderful mother (she learnt from one of the best!) It is scary to see her looking so thin at the moment though. I know of some broodmares that drop a tonne of weight when they foal so she might just be one of those mares? Thankfully it’s a good season for forage! Cute name too, though I may be biased as my horse came from Oklahoma 🙂
As far as Juniper goes, kicking at foals that aren’t their own does seem to be relatively typical behaviour for some mares, particularly inexperienced maiden mares or moody ones who are already dealing with their own foals. Foals can be quite pesky sometimes-good thing they are tougher than they look (and it helps that they are so cute! 🙂 )
A mare’s muscles also all drop down and become really loose right before they foal and it takes awhile for them to “travel back up.” That can make them look extra skinny too. And right before/ right after they foal they start burning even more calories than before.
That’s true too, and it seems to me like you can maybe see evidence of this in her flank area in the first couple of pictures? Even so, putting on some weight can only help her! 🙂 raising babies is no small task!
