2014, Who Will Have Foals This Year?

Nye and Niobrara, June 2013
Nye and Niobrara, June 2013

It is that time of year again!  Time for the 3rd annual “Who Will Have Foals” post.  This is based off of the current PZP (birth control) program and include those mares who should not have been given the drug.  Of course, not all of these mares may foal and then, like every year, there will most likely be a few surprises.

This year the window of “Non-PZP” are the mares born from 2003-2008.  I will be including those from 2009 as well.  The 2009 mares are a maybe.

So here we go:

DRYHEAD

There are four mares in the Dryhead that may foal.   I have made one exception from the formula of non-PZP mares, I am including Kitalpha, even though she was born in 2010, because I am betting that she may foal again, simply because no one even saw her filly until it was a few months old, so I am thinking they may not have found her to do a treatment on.

1.  Kitalpha, born in 2010, daughter of Buffalo Girl and Durango.  She was last seen with the stallion Bristol.

2.  Jewel, born in 2009, daughter of Waif and Corona.  She was last seen in Hidalgo’s band, but has been with Fools Crow.  So if she does foal, it could be either of these stallions.

3.  Icara, born in 2008, daughter of Waif and Corona.  Currently seen with Fools Crow she has also been with Hidalgo.

6.  Waif, born in 1997, daughter of Twiggy and Cortez.  She is currently in Corona’s band.  Yes, she is out of the PZP window.  But after seeing recent photos of her, I am positive she is pregnant.  I discovered Norte the end of April last year and I am thinking Waif will most likely foal again the end of March.  Waif was most likely not found to PZP in time this past year to prevent her from foaling.

3. Gabrielle, born in 2006, daughter of Brumby and Jackson.  Currently in Cappuccino’s band.  I have posted two photos of her.  This summer, it seemed she would never lift her head for a good shot, so I have included one of her this summer and one with her head up last February.

6.  Dove, born in 2003, daughter of Phoenix and Teton.  This is a maybe.  She will be 11 this year, so I believe she may have been given PZP, but I decided to include her here anyway.  Dove is currently in Coronado’s band.

7.  Demure, born in 2003, daughter of Broken Bow and Two Boots.  Same as Dove above, not sure if she was given PZP, but I am including her in hopes that there will be a Doc and Demure foal this year that survives.  Demure is currently with Doc.

9.  Helenium, born in 2007, daughter of Rosebud and Sandman.  Helenium is currently in Duke’s band.  As I looked through my photos to find one of her, I realized that I do not have any good ones of her from this year.  Her daughter Noble stole my heart and took my attention every time I saw her!  This year I vow to get good photos of Helenium!

10.  Hera, born in 2007, daughter of Audobon and Morning Star.  Hera is currently in Galaxy’s band.  I saw Galaxy breeding her when I was there in early September, so if she does foal, it may not be until August.

12.  Jacinta, born in 2009, daughter of Rosebud and possibly Tecumseh.  Jacinta is currently in Gringo’s band.  Many of us thought Jacinta was pregnant last spring.   It is believed she had a foal that did not survive and that no-one saw.

13.  Galadrial, born in 2006, daughter of Atlantis and Duke.  Galadrial is currently in Gringo’s band.  My friend Anh saw Tecumseh breeding her in mid-September, so if she does foal, it may not be until mid-August.

16.  Heritage, born in 2007, daughter of Lakota and Warbonnet.  She is currently in Jackson’s band. I adopted Heritage’s only living offspring in 2012, Kootenai.  I would really like to see her have a foal this year, and one with Jackson would make it even better!

19.  Hailstorm, born in 2007, daughter of Aztec and Cloud.  She is currently in Morning Star’s band.  Many thought she was pregnant this year.  She may have even had a very late foal that no one has seen.  I saw this band from a distance the end of October and did not see a foal with her then.  My hope is she was not pregnant, but will have one this year giving her and her foal a better chance of life, born in the spring instead of the fall.

That is all of the official possibilities for 2014.  A total of 30 foals may be born.  I have a feeling it will be less than that, we will just have to wait and see!

Unfortunately, managing the herd with PZP is a must at this time.  But I believe that there are more problems arising from this, both physical and mentally within the herd.  I witnessed one of those last year with the “stealing” of Nacer by two bands that did not have any new foals (because of PZP).  How many other times does that occur, without our knowledge?  When only a handful of people who go up to view the horses actually know each and every one of them, it is hard to identify when a new foal is with the wrong band.  There were several horses that were thought to be pregnant last year and then suddenly “looked thin”.  Was it a natural death for those foals, or did the same happen to them that happened to Nacer?  We will never know.   Those same bands will be without foals again this year.  Something to watch and certainly keep notes on.  Also, why are some mares that are in the “No PZP” not conceiving?  There can of course be several other factors for those reasons, but again, worth keeping an eye on and making notes about.

My next post will be “The Name Game”, giving everyone an opportunity to suggest names for these new foals.  Remember, it is an “O” year and please try to suggest names fitting to the mare and/or stallion.  Some past names have very apparent themes, so we try to stick with those.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here!

  • I hope there are lots of foals and all of them survive … not realistic, but a hope. Please keep taking those notes, Sandy. You do everyone a great service! The only name I can think of is for Galadriel if she has a colt: “Oberon.”

    • No, but I guess I should. I just go off of the no-pzp window for the most part, so it is really not if I am accurate or not, just reporting the facts they way they should lay out. I know that some mares should have foaled last year and did not, and of course there were a were some surprises, like Audobon, Kitalpha, Washakie and LaBrava I know I did not have them on the list last year because “technically” they should not have foaled.

  • Your shots are so beautiful, as always, that it’s hard to pick a favorite! I think I like the ones of Galena and Gaelic Princess best. Beautiful work!

  • Once again, thank you for all the work you do to keep records and us informed. I am looking forward to seeing the new babies this spring, summer and fall (hopefully not to many in fall).

  • This is great Sandy. One of my New Years resolutions is to pay more attention to this in 2014. All the mares are beautiful and the foals will be, too. I just hope there are not so many that a gather becomes necessary in the near future. Will try to come up with some good names. 🙂

  • I think as far as the pzp window goes, Demure and Dove were not treated last year. They’re not treated from the year they turn five through the year that they turn 10. So then they begin treatment again the year they turn 11. They don’t foal at 5 (according to treatment plan) because that’s the first year they go off treatment, so they get pregnant that year and then foal as a 6 year old. So they also should have conceived last year when in their last year of the non-pzp year. So this year they will have their last foal (according to the treatment plan) and also begin receiving pzp treatment again.

I definitely hope to see a surviving Doc x Demure foal!

      • That is really unfortunate. Hopefully if any of those mares don’t have at least 2 or 3 surviving foals at the time their window is supposed to close their plan can be adjusted to give them an extra year since they were mistakenly treated. Do you happen to know which mares?

      • 🙁 🙁 🙁 ! Hopefully, more care will be taken next time. This is a good example of one of the reasons the formula shouldn’t be made more aggressive—just in case.

  • This is awesome reading in the slow wintermonths! Keeping my fingers crossed for Hera and Hailstorm this year. Some pairs like Greta and Garcia, and Waif and Corona, always seem to have the most beautiful foals. I just bet it will be the same for Hera and Galaxy! She really is a stunning mare. Also hope that Isadora will get to have a foal who survives. And Jacinta, Demure, and so on;) I always feel so bad for the mares who lost their last foal, regardless of the reasons. La Brava is getting darted I guess? And is Washakie one of the mares that seems to be immune to pzp?

    • Thank you Anne! Yes, LaBrave is only 3, so she will have been treated. Washakie does seem to be immune to the PZP. I certainly hope it is not the case again this year, otherwise she will have another late foal.

I was hoping for a Hera-Galaxy foal last year and hope there is one this year!

  • All three of the Rosarita x Starman sisters and the Waif x Corona sisters are all in the window together now 🙂 I’m hoping Flint and Isadora will produce a stunning blue roan foal! And I hope if Halcyon is pregnant again she’ll winter better than last year. Flint’s band usually winters pretty well, so hopefully she will too. I would also love to see Fiasco have a foal that ends up with Custer’s coloring. I know we all would love to see a Hera x Galaxy foal this year since we didn’t last year. Hopefully she will foal close to the beginning of August. And whenever there’s a foal born with a surprising color it’s always interesting to see if it happens again. So looking forward to Half Moon’s and Helenium’s foals. If Chance is the sire of Galadriel’s (if she foals) that kind of worked out since her and Gringo are half siblings. I have been waiting waiting waiting to see a foal from Juniper and Horizon so that would definitely be nice. I’ve also been waiting on Hailstorm too. Hopefully, like you said she was just fat and not pregnant, although I’m one of the people who really thought she was pregnant. So I would love to see an earlier foal from her this coming year. If she did foal late fall of 2013 and it didn’t survive, I hope she didn’t then conceive again so late in the year. I anticipate a stunning foal from her at some point in the future though! I hope Firestorm will give us another blue roan foal. LeDoux was so gorgeous and reminded me so much of Velvet. I really hope we see a foal from Ingrid and Cloud. That’s one I’ve really been looking forward to too. I’d love a buckskin! It will also be interesting to see if Feldspar produces another foal with a face like Mica and Encore since their face markings are nearly identical to each other! Hopefully we see foals from those mares who have either never foaled, or have no offspring on the range anymore.

Thanks for putting this together for us! It’s nice to be able to look at the group as a whole. I look forward to the Name Game post! 🙂

  • I am desperately hoping for 2014 Demure and Gaelic Princess foals. I want a Galadriel foal as well, since she is such a lovely mare, but ugh on the inbreeding factor. Ooh,and Fiasco (obviously). I would kill for her to pop out a little bay roan filly, though it seems unlikely given the coloration on Fiasco’s side of the family tree.

Overall, I’ve got about 14-15 I really really want to see foal, and a few I’m ‘meh that’d be cool’ about. I am actively hoping that Kitalpha, Halcyon, Firestorm, and Feldspar do *not* foal. Kitalpha has had such a rough go of it in life that another foal so young would just be piling it on her even more. I agree there’s no way the BLM PZP’d her last winter, seeing as she’s a little Lazarus pony. The other 3 just deserve a break. I also won’t be too upset when Washakie (most likely) doesn’t foal in 2014, much as I love the old gal.

    • Thanks Rachel! Tecumseh was seen breeding Galadrial in September, so if she does foal, it may be his (although their is no way of knowing if Gringo also bred her), so if it is Tecumsehs, there would be no inbreeding. I guess if she does we will all hope it is healthy.

I also hope that Washakie does not foal. As much as I love her foals, she needs a break at her age. Not to mention it would be another late foal.

      • Maybe if Galadrial is pregnant the foal will roan out. Haha then we’d know for sure which stallion it was! But with her being solid, the foal could still be by Chance and also be solid.

    • I would also love to see Fiasco pop out a little bay roan filly! I’d really like to see Gaelic Princess foal too

  • So interesting to read your post. I would very much like to see án alternative approach to the pzp program. They should consider more who already have offsprings on the range and also which bands will be without foals. Like for example Hicok and Seneca and Bolders band. I would also love to see another foal from War Bonnet although she is án old lady!

    • Hi Thora,

I agree, the PZP program has a lot of room for improvement.

Don’t forget that Heritage is a look-a-like to her mother War Bonnet. Heritage won’t be able to produce a Kayenta (whom we all adored), but she will pass on Warbonnets genes.

Of all the mares that may be pregnant, she is the top one for me. Heritage has no living offspring on the range. They removed her only one, Kootenai, in 2012. He lives here with me. Now I am not saying they should not have removed him, I don’t believe he would ever have become a band stallion. But having another Heritage offspring on the range would be wonderful!

      • That is true and Heritage also hás Lakotas genes, right? But i still think some of the older mares should have foals with certain interval and not “sterilize” them completely but of course some control is needed and the right way always debated. Really look forward to discuss all these things with you next summer when we meet

  • So looking forward to some of these combos, a lot of my favourites are within the window! I have quite a few name ideas for the next post too 🙂

Firestorm and Feldspar always have such gorgeous foals but I have to agree with those who think they need a break!

    • I agree, as much as I look forward to Firestorm and Feldspar foals and as gorgeous as they always turn out to be, it would be really nice for them to have a break. Each of them has foaled 5 out of the past 6 years. They both had their first foals in 2008, but Feldspar’s didn’t survive. And then Firestorm didn’t foal in 2009 and Feldspar didn’t foal in 2011.
