August In The Pryors. Part 7. The Dryhead.

Mercuria and Morgana
Mercuria and Morgana

I had to laugh when I titled this post.  Part 7.  When I did the first post for my August Trip (Part 1), I was actually thinking of just making one post!  Well, that certainly did not happen.   I have posted almost 400 photos from my 9 day trip!  I hope you don’t mind me publishing so many posts.

Below are some of the photos we took while up the Dryhead.  I so love the Dryhead horses.  It is always so amazing to me to see them surviving on this part of the range.  It seems they have so little to eat. But they all looked amazing.

Each day that I spent in the Dryhead, I saw Fools Crow and his band.  It was great to see him with a band, and I enjoyed them becoming the new greeters for me this trip.

There were a few horses I did not see close up.  But my friend Anh, spent a day in the Dryhead when I was giving one of my day trip tours.  I have included some of her photos as well.  Thank you Anh for sharing!

  • Haha, I’m pretty sure you could make a new post everyday and have every photo you take in them, and we all would be just thrilled! :S
I will get around to comment more soon! I just love seeing Hidatsa with a mare, he’s a very handsome stallion and it’a great seeing the younger stallions growing up. I’m also happy to see the Dryhead mares being more spread out and not a bunch in one band. Wish Merlin would win back one though, he’s had a tough time the last year. Can’t wait to see what happens to this years yearlingfillys next year:) What if Medicin Bow could win one!! 😀

  • Love this post. 🙂 Thanks to you both for sharing your pics. It is especially good to see the ones of Hidatsa and Belle Starr, since I never did see them when I was there. And Montana just keeps looking better and better every time I see him—and Hidalgo, too. It is great to see all the mares looking so healthy, and I truly love the scenery of the Dryhead and lower slopes of Burnt Timber and Sykes. You can be sure I’ll re-viewing this one a time or two. 🙂

  • Any news of Inniq ? I know he’s elusive but he’s supposed to stay in the Dryhead. Keep on posting, we all love your pictures.

      • Hello Sandy and Sarah, Belle Starr did seem content to be with Hidatsa. Hidalgo and his band were near by Hidatsa and Belle Starr. Hidatsa snaked Belle Starr away from Hildago and then they both crossed the road and disappeared into the sage bushes in the Mustang Flat. I love Belle Starr. Her eyes are beautiful. I have some photos of her from last year (she was with Fool Crow then). She looked real good then and now she looks great.

    • I saw Inniq when I was out there in June. He was on Lower Sykes and the Dryhead with Medicine Bow and Jesse James at that time. He looks GREAT. I think I have some pics of him on Flickr. Will have to check that. 🙂

      • Hello Sandy and Sarah,

  • I don’t mind you publishing so many posts at all! The more the better! Same with all of the pictures, I would happily look through every picture you took 🙂 I’m so happy to see pictures of Fools Crow’s band. I love that group! Quite a good looking group too! Mercuria and Morgana are quite the beautiful young ladies. I LOVE Morgana, she’s one of my favorite “M” foals. I have always adored her. Hidalgo’s band looks good too. He’s another I like to see. Fresia looks big, but I think Montana has been nursing her all summer so I’d don’t think she’s pregnant. I hope we see a foal from Halo next year. Can’t wait to see what kind of foal her and Hidalgo could produce. I loved Kaelia (and Malayna)!! Montana has some very stripy legs! I don’t think I’ve noticed before that they go all the way up the inside of his hind legs. I’ve also never noticed how much him and Mato look alike. Are Merlin and Sitting Bull related?

And thank you for sharing your pictures with us too Ahn! Wow Hidatsa sure looks like Merlin in that middle picture! Their faces are so similar, minus the blaze of course! Seneca, Hightail, and Hickok all look good too. I have a question about Belle Starr and Hidatsa for you. How was the dynamic between them? Does she seem content to be with him, or not so much? I just wonder because she was with Fools Crow for so long. Thank you both!

    • Thanks Sarah, Merlin and Sitting Bull have the same father: Lancelot. Yes, Montana is really a stripy boy! I saw those strips on the inside of his legs and had to take a photo of them! 🙂

Hopefully Anh sees your question. I was wondering about Belle Starr too. But whats not to like about Hidatsa! HA! If I was a mare, I would be pretty happy with him! 🙂

      • I thought they had the same father, but wasn’t sure. I also forgot to add that I am looking forward to hopefully seeing some Hidalgo babies next year, but also that I have to admit I was disappointed that Hidalgo kept all of the mares the entire summer, because I was hoping to see both Hidalgo and Fools Crow babies next year. But hopefully we will see some Fools Crow babies the next year. I think a foal from him and Icara or Jewel would be stunning. Maybe even another beautiful blue roan! 🙂

  • I read and enjoyed all your latest posts but I’m just going to comment on the last one. This makes me excited for next summer! Also my favorite band The Odd Couple–there’s a fourth horse tagging along with them now?

    • Yes. Tonapah is actually acting as the lead mare. She was with Duke, but left to be with these guys in June. Tonapah is 27 this year. She seems to have a good influence on them.

Thanks Amelie! I am looking forward to next summer too! 🙂

      • When I saw them when this first happened, it appeared to me that Juniper was REALLY happy to have her around. She followed closely to her and seemed to have a little more “spring in her step”, than I had seen before. 🙂
