Dryhead Update and Trip Summary

Most mornings and all evenings we would drive up the Dryhead to see who we could see.  On this trip we would see 27 of the 39 Dryhead Horses,  9 of those would be seen in the Dryhead.  The rest of the Dryhead horses that I saw were up on Sykes Ridge.  You can read about that day by clicking on SYKES.  Here are some of the photos I took while in the Dryhead.   We saw more Bighorn Sheep and Mule Deer in the Dryhead area than we saw horses.

We saw 73 mountain horses plus 9 unidentified horses (maybe another foal!), which I will add to the total here.  Total mountain horses: 82.

Total Horses: 109.   It was a great trip!  Of course there were other horses I would have loved to have seen.  But considering the time of year, I felt this trip was very successful.  Anh and I were both happy and discovering 3 new foals, just made it all the more special!

I am already thinking about my next trip!

  1. You were very fortunate to see so many horses, and OH the foals…I just love them. A special trip for you and Anh indeed!!!
Thanks for all of the beautiful photos that you have shared and also the creative writing!!

I always seem to see Issaquah and Hawk together too, and now I am finding Hidatsa and Johnston together quite often. I guess, like people, they hang out with the ones who they get along with best and have fun with!! (:
We will see how the drama unfolds this spring with the DH bachelors and the few mares that do live there.

    1. That will be interesting to watch! Maybe Hidalgo, Fools Crow and Blizzard will bring down some mountain mares (they were within reach of them when I was there last Sunday). Now that would be exciting to see! Thanks Lori!

  2. Thank you for the news! Seems like everyone is doing well and all three foals seem pretty healthy. Can’t wait to see what the summer brings 🙂

  3. The grullo boys are looking good! So are Hawk and Issaquah. Love the one of Issaquah looking over his shoulder at you. By the way, how do you pronounce his name? So glad you found those three adorable foals! I can’t wait to see the rest of them. Nye is a sturdy little girl. I bet she’s going to resemble her Daddy in body type.

      1. Thanks! I wasn’t sure if it was pronounced like that or like “Issac.” Haha it would be nice if some of the stallions could get pregnant since there’s a lack of reproducing mares in the dryhead!

  4. Sandy, what great days!! Thanks for the photos and updates. Have you seen Merlin or Medicine Bow on any of your visits this spring? Especially concerned for Merlin and Medicine Bow is very special to me. So happy the foals are doing well. Thanks for getting the blogs out so soon.

    1. Thank you Laura! No, I have not seen Merlin or Medicine Bow. But last year at this time I saw Medicine Bow up Sykes with Johan. I bet that is where he is and maybe since Merlin is a bachelor he is up there too. So many places for them to be up there and so easy to miss them. They may have even been with Chief Joseph and we may have missed seeing them that day.

  5. I have been looking for those two also as I have not seen them for quite some time. As soon as I do I will let you know Laura. I know how special Medicine Bow is to you and also Merlin! I pray that they are just staying in those places where nobody can see them and that they are doing well.

  6. Goodness, Nye is looking so much like her father. I can’t wait to watch her grow in such a pleasant herd. Jackson really is a grand stallion. Nodin also looks very healthy and happy. He’s going to be a big boy!

I’m really happy to see Feirro doing well too. He is a very special stallion to me and I’d like to see him get a mare or two. How old is he now?

    1. Hi Maleah, Fiero is 8 this year, so he still has time to get another band. He seems content right now to just eat and get fat! I think he may have needed a break from the mares! HA! He is the full brother of Hidatsa and also a full brother to my Valerosa, so those 3 Merlin (the sire), Hidatsa and Fiero are very special to me as well!

      1. Oh goody! I was hoping he was still young. Yeah I think Fiero reminds me of Merlin, and that’s why I like him so much. Always have since I first saw his pic last spring. I’m just starting to get to know Hidatsa, but boy does he look healthy!

  7. Good to see the Dryhead boys looking well, and the greeter mares, too. The foals are so precious, as always. 🙂 Making me anxious to make the trip again.

Nice pics of you and Anh. You look like you were enjoying yourselves. 🙂

I love the pics of the deer and Bighorns, also. There is a great deal of beauty in that land, along with the horses. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your trips.
