I got up early the morning of the 3oth. I wanted to head up the Dryhead again before I was to meet Lori at Britton Springs to see the horses removed.
I saw the 4 greeters to the right as I entered the range. I said hello, but I did not stop, I wanted to see who else might be out this cool morning. I was really hoping to see Kerry and her foal and Kaelia and her new foal. I had heard that Kerry was back with Durango.
I came slowly around a bend in the road and saw Durango with the two little ones, Morgana, who was the first foal born in April and Kerry’s foal, who was born in June. I never get used to seeing the horses on a paved road. I always seem to catch my breath, wishing they were not in the middle of the road walking. But, I was happy to see them. Durango was staying behind the little ones and taking really good care of them. It was really touching to see.
I watched them for a while until they decided to move on and head up a small hill.
I slowly continued up the road. I had not gone far when I saw a bunch of Dryhead boys watching Durango and his band. Umm, I thought, this might get interesting.
Durango stood watching them for a minute and then decided to head over and say hello. Pretty smart move I thought. Go to them and not let them come any closer to your band.
Once he reached the bachelors, there was a lot of discussion. It was fun to watch.
After a few minutes Durango headed back to his band. I needed to leave too. I did see Merlin and his band off in the distance a bit (you can see them in the background of some of these photos). I did not have time to get any closer.
I met Lori at the Britton Springs pens where the horses that were removed were being held. We walked around and I took a few photos of them. I felt some of the recognized me, because a couple of them walked over by me.
I thought the hay looked like very high quality hay and the horses seemed to be enjoying it.
Joviana still has a way to go before she is healthy. But she is producing some milk again.
I felt the horses looked very well cared for. It was tough seeing them there, but everyone seem okay.
Lori and I left and started to heading up the mountain.

Morgana is so beautiful, again they all are but she stands out. That is rough seeing them in the holding pens, really rough and I am just seeing the pic’s, for all who see them there it must be such a strange and , well at least you said they all get adopted, hopefully into a 4-ever home….Beautiful pictures, as always Sandy, can’t go wrong with these horses to make the best photos’..Thanks Sandy for doing what you do….
Thank you Sandy for your passion and the love of the wild horses. You have done a wonderful work keeping us updating with The Pryors. You have helped me to know the horses and to grow to love all of them. It is hard for horses being held in the pens. Hopefully, they all will be adopted into loving homes with lots of room to roam. It’s nice seeing Durango with some company and it’s so sweet how caring he is to the two foals. I think I heard somewhere that Durango is possibly the sire of Kerry’s foal, do you think he is? And I loved the photo of the dryhead boys watching Durango and his band approach. It was also so sweet to see Liesl grooming with Malakai. I think she really has just been craving some company. She seems like such a sweet girl!
Also please let us know when Jicarilla foals!
Yes, I think Durango is Kerry’s foals father! I will let you know about Jicarilla, if I find out! 🙂
How are all the captured horses doing? Im more worried about Joviana and her foal but it’s a good thing they were removed before anything bad happened to them. I think Agate(Krystal), Breeze(Kierra) and Adelina(Judith) have bonded very closely but I hope all will go to great homes and make new friends.
Joviana is doing better Jonathan. Everyone seems to be doing okay. They are taking good care of them.
I hope they are adopted to good homes. I wish I could adopt one or two of them
Hi Sandy not sure if you can help me. I have been keeping track of these lovely horses for a while now can you tell me how Kaelia fits in I have never heard of her before. Is she known by any other name and who are her parents?

Hi Rebecca, Kaelia is the 2010 daughter of Merlin and Halo. That is the only name I know her by. She is a Dryhead horse. She had a foal not too long ago, a filly named Malayna.

Gosh Sandy, somehow I missed this post and gasped when I saw the photo of the horses and foals in the ROAD! Glad they headed up the hill. Are many wild horses killed on roads out there? GREAT photos!
Hi Diane, This is in a National Park (Bighorn Canyon), so people are supposed to drive slow….. There were 2 horses that were killed last year, it involved a drunk driver. Very sad, but for the most part people are respectful. I do wish they would lower the speed limit more, however. Right now it is set at 45, then 35 through a bit of it. But I think having it all set at 35 would be better. Can’t look for horses driving 45 or even 35…
